The publisher and editor of The Randolph Leader in Roanoke, AL since 1982, John is a 2010 Auburn Journalism Honors recipient. On April 23, the Auburn University Journalism Advisory Council recognizes him as this year’s Distinguished Alabama Community Journalist.
John is the third generation Stevenson to serve as The Randolph Leader publisher and editor and only the third editor of the newspaper his grandfather founded in 1892. He did not intend to make the newspaper his career. He earned a business degree at Auburn University and an MBA at Pepperdine University. He served six years on active duty as an Army officer before returning to his newspaper roots.
When called upon to take The Leader’s helm, John began an innovative career that has gained recognition in his community, state and nation. He is immediate past president of the National Newspaper Association and has served as president of the Alabama Press Association as well as on numerous committees of both organizations. Besides its Wednesday in-print newspaper, The Leader has developed what is recognized as an ambitious web presence enabling it to provide more frequently updated local news coverage and advertising for its readers.
